Dermabrasion or physical face lift is a surgical procedure that aims at improving the scarring surface of the facial skin, previously damaged by poor healing.
This procedure is relatively simple: by using a surgical instrument, the scar tissue that is altered will be gently and carefully lifted to reach the base of normal skin.
The skin tissue will be treated with ointments (such as antibiotics or mineral oils) in order to reduce the formation of crusting and, therefore, reduce scar formation.
Dermabrasion is useful for smoothing the skin surface and reducing scars and wrinkles.
The most frequent indications are:
- Facial scars secondary to cystic acne, accidents or previous surgery.
- Age-related cutaneous neoplasms (seborrheic keratosis).
- Facial wrinkles.
- Precancerous lesions (senile keratosis).
Dermabrasion may be applied to small areas of the skin or the entire face, and it can also be used as an adjunct to other procedures such as facial rejuvenation (rhytidectomy) or chemical peeling.
